“Slow Dance”–A poem Written by a Cancer Teenager. Fact or Fiction?

I got this message and the poem this morning. From my research, this is a very beautiful poem has for years circulated round the internet with claims that it was written by a cancer teenager. It follows that forwarding the emails and Broadcast messages of the poem will help raise funds to support the American cancer society. It has endlessly found it’s way into email boxes and IM broadcasts with the exact message– “This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital. It was sent by a medical doctor- Make sure to read what is in the closing statement after the poem She wants to see how many people get her poem. It is quite the poem, please pass it on…”

Well, it’s all fiction! According to Truthorfiction.com and wikipedia, these claims are totally false. This beautiful poem that has gained this much recognition was originally written by –David L. Weatherford

This is just an inspiring poem that reminds us to appreciate life better while we still have the time! Enjoy 🙂

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down, don’t dance so fast.
Time is short, the music won’t last

Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask “How are you?” Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores running through your head?

You’d better slow down, don’t dance so fast.
Time is short, the music won’t last.

Ever told your child, we’ll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time to call and say,’Hi’

You’d better slow down don’t dance so fast.
Time is short, the music won’t last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift thrown away.

Life is not a race, do take it slower
Hear the music, before the song is over.

“I believe that most of my writing reflects the fact that I have essentially distilled my primary values down to two core life essentials that undergird everything that truly matters: God and Love.  These are the answers to every question that I consider to be important.  Because of them, I am able to find joy and meaning in each day, look forward to the future with hope rather than fear, and endure all hurts along the way.  God and Love provide the guideposts for my life journey; I hope that you have found what lights your path. ”

– David L. Weatherford, child psychologist.
